NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE UNDERDOG

By Vernalee

There he goes! No, it isn’t Mighty Mouse flying and singing, “Here I come to save the day!” The vision is clearly Underdog! Remember him! For those who need a refresher, Underdog was the humble/lovable superhero who was Shoeshine Boy’s alter ego. He always changed into his superhero suit in a phone booth, which would explode afterwards. In general, Underdogs are the persons that no one expects to be victorious. They normally have little status. The Underdog is usually not best equipped to carry out a mission, but amazingly, he/she gets it done! He/she is a competitor thought to have little chance of winning a fight or contest. The underdog is considered the weaker party; the victim, prey, loser, scapegoat, fall guy ...

They are referred to as nobodies. Admittedly, there is something different about these underdogs! We see it frequently. For example, the team least expected to win carry their teammates to victory.

How? Is it tenacity? Is it courage? Is it the lack of fear of starting over with nothing? Is it the agony of defeat juxtaposed against the joy of winning? Do they work harder when challenged or under pressure? Is it humility? Perhaps, they are not weighted down with abundant over-confidence, puffed up pride, and lofty arrogance. Maybe, they have thrown out of the window the superficial air that many of their counterparts carry. I can't quite put my fingers on where their secret lies or exactly what makes them tick!

Maybe, they keep going because they have been counted out. Maybe, they believe in themselves. With their gumption and motivating spirit, I do know that they don't easily give up. They race to the finish line though the odds are truly against them.

Many have tried to figure out - what is the special quality to these unsung underdogs.

They are called losers from time to time, but everyone admire them when they claim victory.

So, who needs checking - us or them? Beats me!

I just know that to win, you have to stay in the game. You have to keep trying. You have to believe in yourself when no one else does. You cannot give up.

OMG! What is that sound that I hear? It is the music in the background playing that famous jingle, “There is no need to fear, Underdog is here!”
