The rule books says that the person entering the room should speak first. Maybe so, However, growing up in the Mississippi Delta that rule didn’t necessarily apply. Failure to speak ~ whether coming or going - was a cardinal sin that exacted punishment. Everybody (no matter who they were or what they had) was a regular person who deserved being acknowledged. It doesn’t cost you anything to speak. It’s free! Speaking is regarded as a basic courtesy and the first line of common courtesy and respect. Speaking to everyone was required whether you liked them or not. It is an old standby that never leaves. Hello!
