As we commemorate the 57th anniversary of “Bloody Sunday,” the day in 1965 when white state troopers attacked Black voting rights marchers attempting to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge, we reflect on the importance of music during the Civil Rights era. State troopers on March 7, 1965, beat and tear-gassed peaceful demonstrators, including young activist John Lewis, who later became a longtime Georgia congressman. The images of the violence shocked a nation and helped galvanize support for passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. No we ain't gonna let nobody turn us round as God brought us this far by faith. He will continue to guide us and order our steps. Happy Sunday! Blessings!

With this being the last Sunday in Black History Month, let’s reminisce by hearing the voice of the late Mahalia Jackson, regarded as the greatest gospel singer of all times. She performed this song in the movie, "Imitation of Life," a story about Motherhood and race. As we strive today to achieve equal rights and eradicate discrimination, It is so refreshing to know that God created man in his own image. (Genesis 1:27). Unlike man, God sees us all equally. We are all the same in his eyes. What A blessing! Hallelujah! Happy Sunday!

"Precious Lord" is one of those "pick you up" gospel songs.

Indeed, it was Dr. Martin Luther King's favorite! When he wanted to "hear the voice of God," King called upon Mahalia Jackson to sing "Precious Lord." The lyrics magically transport the Holy Ghost spirit to your presence. "Precious Lord” was also my Mother’s favorite song. Her voice was not as velvety as Mahalia's, but with her pink apron tied around her waist as she cooked, that woman could "take you to church right there in her kitchen!" Her melodies as she asked “The Lord to take her hand and lead her” transported you spiritually as you received a baptism of praise; a hallelujah good time! My praying Momma taught me to lean on the Lord! So when she sang, I listened. I sang along and became filled with hope and the presence of the Holy Ghost spirit! What beautiful memories! Memories that I will never forget! Memories that live on forever and a day In my soul … in my heart!

Happy Sunday!

Blessings!
