Fannie Lou Hamer, a poor sharecropper from Ruleville, Mississippi became a powerful voice in the Civil Rights Movement. Though severely beaten in a jail house in 1963, she advocated and fought for the right to vote. She was a "tough, in-your-face, tell-it-like-it-is presence who spoke truth to power and stood up to the white power structure that ruled the state of Mississippi." Hamer’s big spirit was only matched by her passion for civil and human rights.

In her outspoken way, Fannie Lou Hamer said, “I am sick and tired of being sick and tired!”

Said over 50 years ago, her words vividly resonate today. I too am sick and tired! Aren't you?
