IT TAKES A VILLAGE

By Vernalee

"It takes a village to raise a child is an Igbo and Yoruba proverb that exists in many different African languages. It reflects the emphasis that African cultures place on family and community. Originating from the Bible, this proverb is so widely used in Africa that there are equivalent statements including "One knee does not bring up a child" in Sukuma and "One hand does not nurse a child" in Swahili. The widespread use of this proverb by cultures around the world shows its timelessness and relevancy. The saying evokes feelings of community.

The proverb has biblical origins as found in Ecclesiastes 4:9,12 and Isaiah 49:15-16 respective to unity and self-sacrifice. In many African communities, it is common for a child to be raised by its extended family living with grandparents, aunts and uncles. The ”raising” gets even wider with community involvement as children are seen as blessings from God.” Yes, regardless of the locale - Glen Allan, Mississippi, Cleveland, Ohio, Houston, Texas, Chicago, Illinois, Milwaukee, Wisconsin - it takes a village, many hands, and words of wisdom to raise a child! I am so grateful to my Mother, my sister, my aunts, and other family members who showed concern and “spoke” into my children lives and their development! Photo credit:
