Look at that old lady using a stick for her walking cane...

Take a good look at her. Her feet and soul seem tired. She looks frail and weary, but I know that her eyes have seen many many moons. I saw many of those old ladies in my hometown in Mississippi. Some of the things that they told me, I took heed. Others, I did not. My friends and I discounted their advice. Sounds familiar? "Count yourself blessed if you have elders in your life who can give you good and true counsel, and show you the right ways in life. Our elders have a lot of life experiences from which we can learn. Seek them out and give a listening ear to their wisdom. Your life will be better for it. A wise man or a woman is the one who listens to wise counsel." " Wisdom is found in those who take advice " ~ Proverbs 13:10

What a resource we have in our old folks who have walked many miles on dirt, gravel, and paved road. They know where all the dangerous holes and curves are. They know what to avoid, when to stop, and when to take a detour. They even know when it’s safe not to journey. Imagine that!

Yes it’s true that age has slowed them down. Their steps are not as fast as they once were. The younger ones can run circles around them. But they have the wisdom. They know and have navigated the path many times over.

In hindsight, I wished that I had listened more intently! We do many things the hard way, before we learn. I did! I suspect so did you. Now I know the true meaning of that proverb, "The youth can walk fast, but the elder knows the road." I know that wisdom is wealth. I now realize how wise they were. I share this with you so that you can take heed and share with others.

Normally, if and when we reveal our secrets, we tell them to people that we trust (or thought we could trust). Then, we hope that our secrets are kept secret! My Momma told me long ago, “Beware of who you tell your business to coz some folks can’t hold water!” True that! Raise your hand if you know a few!

Metaphorically, just like running water, so too will be your business if it gets into the wrong hands! Watch this!

When people tell you, “I have something to tell you, but you can’t tell no one,” they probably have already told a number of people before they shared it with you. Amazing, isn't it? So much for their breaches of other folk’s confidential information! Unfortunately, when and if your secrets are revealed, it is extremely hurtful to know that your confidences are circulating throughout the universe traveling at an incredible speed! Do know that it becomes more juicier as it travels. With every stop, the storyteller adds their commentaries before it is passed to the next ear! Unbelievable, isn’t it? It is equally devastating to know that all of this started from the mouth of someone that you thought that you could trust! Pow! This revelation proves that your confidante wasn’t at all confidential! Of course, you feel violated; rightfully so! They say, “Trust no one but your Mother!” A hint to the wise should be sufficient with that statement!

Don't be like many who have learned that very fact the hard way! Be guarded! Stay guarded with what you say! Photo reprint: www.incoherentbabblingsofatweenteendemiblogspot.com

Sometimes, we don’t appreciate the things that we have or people in our lives. In fact, we don't give them a second thought and often take them for granted.

Sometimes, we can be selfish and self absorbed. We deny the implications of selfishness, because it doesn’t sound kind. However, I’ll leave that for you to decide who you are! But I’ll tell you this… when the well runs dry because there is no more water, for sure you will notice and rightfully appreciate then what you previously failed to acknowledge. We all wake up fast after we lose what we had! The lesson is clear. Don't place yourself in the position of only appreciating someone once they are gone. Don't make a person an after thought. Don't lose it to appreciate it. Be thankful and grateful for what you have while you have it.

Take heed. Otherwise you'll go to the well to fetch a bucket of water and the pail will come up empty.
